Trainer, counsellor, speaker, women and girl's mental health advocate and founder of Motherwell Cheshire.
My passion in life is to support and inspire women and girls of all ages. I have many hats that I will explore below.
As a trained counsellor who's needed counselling myself in the past, I talk openly about my own struggles having suffered an ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. In my experience, we have been repeatedly failed by inadequate and disjointed services so my goal is to ensure that the voices of women will finally be heard in the mental health system. Women and girls with complex mental health problems, especially those who have suffered abuse and violence, are in need of specialist support and this cannot be purely clinical.
This is why I set up Motherwell Cheshire which offers community-based projects for vulnerable mothers - giving them access to a support network and bridges the gap in services for women’s wellbeing across Cheshire. My charity is run by women for women and is open to all mothers, whatever their stage in life. I’m a strong believer that information empowers people and I work hard to drive forward change so that our voices are heard. I am passionate about the towns that our charity works in, and like to feel that we play a part in being the heart of the community.
I am a mum of 3 children, 1 daughter and 2 boys. My children are now 10, 14 and 15 years. I have been with my partner for 25 years.
As 10 years have passed since founding the charity I find myself in a different stage of my life, peri menopausal, and very early empty nest, and dealing with parenting 2 teens. All of which has its own unique issues and again therapeutic support is very beneficial.
I love reading, hence my reading section on my website. It sounds a bit cringy but many books I have read have shaped the services that we deliver at Motherwell Cheshire, in my book reviews I explore these more.
Staying active plays a big part in supporting my own mental health, I am an open water swimmer since doing an open water swim challenge in 2017.
Recently I have got back on my bike and joined Crewe Breeze cycling club, a local women's only bike group which I love.
Walking is also my passion - when I get the chance you will always find me by the canal! - read my blog about my Halifax- Manchester bike ride.
My other passion is talking, I love finding out about people, their stories fascinate me, hence my YouTube channel currently launching my “Mum's the Word” YouTube channel, which complements my book ( see Mum's the Word)
In 2020 I also set up Cheshire Womens Collaboration a influencing and campaigning you, it's a voluntary group that I currently sit as a Chair (Cheshire Women's Collaboration) I have been amazed by the great work that the collaboration has achieved and look forward to influencing more changes to support more women and girls.
Over the last 3 years requests for me to deliver more training has gone from strength to strength and as such has taken over my Private Practice in Counselling, now offering counselling on a Friday only. My specialist area in training tends to be Mums Mental Health (please see my current training section)
If I could bullet point what I do I would say the below describes me best:
